A Short Story (a short story, of sorts)

I stare, glare at the black screen through two pieces of plastic glass.  The white too bright to reflect, refract, magnify my muddled words.  Feeling the syllables crawling, scrawling beneath this growing older by the millisecond skin.  Verbal seeds screeching, reaching for the blinding sight of others to inhale, devour, clatter in their respective collective mindscape.  Fading away fingerprints scrolling through digital pages or tips bleeding from flipping sharp paper edges in a frenzy to discover meaning in nonsense and senselessness in moments.  Watering eyes, tears or sweat blurring lines of fictitious reality and really fiction until the happy or not end is reached, achieved.  My voice spent, digits numb from popping letters into place, trying to place the seen from my head onto the dark screen floating in depth, closer than appears but so far from the soul suffocating inside.  Circling the circles surrounding sighing eyes, unable to see what others claim to see inside out.  Inside me within the lines of a short story that may never come to be.

The Emptiness (a short story, of sorts)

Feeling as cold as the dark, icy landscape, the bundled figure trudges alone.  How long has it been since the last encounter with another?  Too long ago and for too brief of time.  Death in this frigid atmosphere is inevitable.

The ending began with a dimming of their star.  Theories turned to conversations.  Conversations turned to disagreements.  Disagreements turned to arguments.  Arguments turned to war.  War over their perceived differences illuminated by the dimming.

The bundled figure comes to a halt amidst the frozen desolation with final, futile understanding.  All of the warfare is what collapsed their civilization.  Their dying star only decimated the remnants of their planet, which now drifts lifelessly through the immeasurable void.

SIDE NOTE
In a moment of freaky fate or creative coincidence, I stumbled upon a piece of new music, right after I finished writing the above short story, and I feel it would make the perfect soundtrack.

The album cover of Emptiness in Static” by Blue Sun Chasing x Armageddon Speaking shows a lone pine tree beside the sun trying to break through the grey sky with a few streaks of color running through it.

The Edge

The following very short story is connected to a short story I wrote in November 2016, a month before losing a chunk of my vision...

He stands alone on the edge of the world.  He had traveled through the fog, losing more than his companion along the way.  Externally battered and bruised from the journey, he collapses onto the barren ground.  Internally drained of hope and desire, he whispers into the emptiness surrounding him.

"Where does one go when there is nowhere left to go?"

The question drifts through the hollow air, fading away into nothing.

IN THE SHADOWS (a very short story)

He stands motionless in his neighbor's living room, staring out the ornate front window.  The gentle evening sun casts crooked shadows over the bloodied walls and furniture.  Scattered behind him, his neighbor is no longer screaming in terror.

A distant siren penetrates the whispering trance he is under.  Other neighbors must have heard the commotion, but that was to be expected.  He knew the act would be violent and loud because the shadows told him so.

I conducted a Twitter poll to see what I should blog about next.  There was a tie and this very short story is one of the winning choices.  Stay tuned for the other winner...Untold Eye Stuff!
