BREAKING NEWS IN STURGEONS!!!!

This just in…

While in the middle of editing DARKENING STURGEONS and HAUNTING STURGEONS into a 2-in-1 print edition, something brand new occurred in my indie author career!  One of my books received a very low rating!
Cover of Darkening Sturgeons by john L. Harmon shows a desolate road leading into a darkening sky.
A reader purchased DARKENING STURGEONS on May 17th and, within 24 hours, a 1 (out of 5) star ⭐️ rating appeared on Amazon.
8 Amazon customer ratings for Darkening Sturgeons by John L. Harmon shows 50% gave it 5 stars, 28% gave it 4 stars and 22% gave it 1 star.
There is, as of this post, no review to go along with this low rating, which is disappointing.  I was hoping to use a so-called “bad review” for promotional material!  Plus, I am interested in knowing what the reader found unappealing about my ebook, so I can do more of it in the future!   Oh well, fingers crossed for next time.

At least I can take comfort in imagining John Waters and the late Andy Milligan being proud of me for unapologetically doing my thing, naysayers be damned!

Bonus points for me if my books make a conventional reader unconventionally uncomfortable! 😉

Thank you for reading or listening to my half-blind words.

A Decade of Dinkel (the 10th anniversary of “DARK EXCURSIONS: first set”)

Calling myself out
Stepping into light
Without a thought or plan
Just a dream held tight
-excerpt from 2013, a poem from VISION BENT (half-blind poems)

It was March 19th, 2013 when I called myself out as an indie author and stepped into light with the release of my first ebook.

The ebook cover for Dark excursions first set shows a pool of blood on a marble floor

DARK EXCURSIONS: first set was out in the world and I was simultaneously excited and terrified.  I wondered if anyone would read my soap opera tale of murder, manipulation and lust.  Then, when a few copies were downloaded, I worried what the readers would think.  Would they understand?  Would they enjoy it?  Would they think it’s utter crap?

Thankfully, the years have brought some positive reviews.  I try to wear those kind words as a shield from the cricket-chirping silence from other readers.  I interpret silence as having nothing good to say, but those quiet readers don’t matter.  If they don’t get my story, then they don’t get me.

Now, ten years later, those readers who get me are still here providing support and encouragement.  This means the world to me and I can’t thank you enough.  You’ve made the last ten years worth it and will make the next ten years even better.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of DARK EXCURSIONS: first set, I seriously considered unpublishing the ebook, but that was born from a dark moment of self-doubt.  Instead, I put together a hardcover edition and this rather spiffy looking book is available from an Amazon near you.

The hardcover edition of DARK EXCURSIONS: first set, by john L. Harmon is displayed with mad scientist glasses and other books
My proof copy is obviously not for resale

So, thank you for loving Dinkel, the one-armed gardener and loving to hate Anapola Van Der Van, the manipulative matriarch.  They are two of my favorite emotionally damaged characters and are waiting to be discovered by new sets of eyes and rediscovered by familiar ones.

Thank you for reading or listening to any and all of my words over these last 10 years.

JLH

Spooky AI Art inspired by HAUNTING STURGEONS!

My fellow blogger friend Dave of My Gay Opinion and his partner surprised me with an AI art show email celebrating my new ebook!  Being an occasionally thoughtful person, I decided to share these pieces of computer-generated art here before donating them to a local museum for display in their public toilets.  What can I say?  I’m a giver!

The following pieces somehow capture the essence of HAUNTING STURGEONS, even though the story doesn’t contain dead fish or ghost fish!

A ghost sturgeon emerges from the ocean.
Does this represent Jimmy’s past or is it the ghost of the first victim in DARKENING STURGEONS?

A dead sturgeon rots in a dark forest.
Something smells fishy in Stickler Woods!

Then my friend thought of mixing HAUNTING STURGEONS with filmmaker John Waters.  In my opinion, it appears the AI is a huge  fan of filmmaker Tim Burton!

A nicely dressed sturgeon skeleton stands next to a fish-faced John Waters.
This could be us, but you playin’!

A delirious John Waters in a flat top hat, stands between well-dressed fish people.
John Waters loves being in a fish people throuple!

Last, but not least, my friend and his partner thought of horror movie and queer movie posters based on HAUNTING STURGEONS.  The results are seriously out there!

A lake ripples before the murky woods.
This would make a great poster for either HS or DS!

Four fish people stare vacantly from the image.
Happy Hour at Gordon’s Bar?

A giant spiked black mass stares angrily with yellow eyes and sharp teeth.
A representation of Eugene Raymond Stickler’s cybernetic bugs?

A man stands with his back facing us while wearing a tattered vest.
Jimmy in the Epilogue?

A spooky tree stands with a gaping hole. Conjoined twin headless sturgeons float near the tree’s hole.
An HS poster lost in translation?

A close up of a screaming person’s face, with odd red eyes,.
A typical reaction to one of my books!

A naked man with a droopy red face holds a bloody fish
A self-portrait of Eugene Raymond Stickler?

The shadow of a menacing deer head with huge antlers faces a barren landscape and cloudy sky.
I like it, but I can’t even pretend to connect it with my ebook!

A deformed man is being ordered by two smaller humanoid creatures with dark elongated black masks covering their faces.
An idea for a third Sturgeons ebook?

A huge thanks to Dave of My Gay Opinion and his partner, who probably did most of the work, for emotionally damaging a defenseless Artificial Intelligence with my ebook!  I literally laughed out loud!

Thank you for reading or listening to my half-blind words.

4 Reasons to read HAUNTING STURGEONS…

4- because it’s “unapologetically queer” which is how fellow blogger My Gay Opinion has described my books!

3 - because Simon Hollis is an extremely helpful and insatiably thirsty ginger librarian!

2- because Ms. Floridia Minch is a nasty gossipmonger who you’ll love to read but would hate in real life!

1 - because HAUNTING STURGEONS is the best piece of fiction I’ve written…so far!

booking freakboy: DOLLS! DOLLS! DOLLS! by Stephen Rebello

Just imagine it...

...VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, the controversial 1967 box office blockbuster, starring...

...Candice Bergen as Anne Wells, the good girl sucked into a world of heartbreak and pills...

Ann-Margret as Neely O'Hara, the talented shooting star that may burn out too soon...

...Raquel Welch as Jennifer North, the stunning beauty who wants to be seen as more than a body...

...and...

...Judy Garland as Helen Lawson, the fierce stage legend fighting to stay on top!

Can you imagine how crazy good, or just plain crazy, that version of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS would have been?  It could've happened, and Judy Garland nearly did.  Sadly, missed opportunities is just one of many things to go awry during the difficult filming of Jacqueline Susann's best-selling novel.

DOLLS! DOLLS! DOLLS! takes a deep dive beneath and beyond the troubled 20th Century Fox production.  With shocking facts and dishy Hollywood gossip, author Stephen Rebello spins a wild tale of uppers, downers and all arounders worthy of Susann.

If you are a fan of the film, or the novel, take this doll and call me in the morning. 💊

booking freakboy: NO DISTANCE BETWEEN US (A YULETIDE STORY) by Young

NO DISTANCE BETWEEN US is a non-fiction short story about one young man's experience at a UK boarding school during the holiday season.  After a fancy ball, the young man and his male friend Nikee explore their desire which will take them beyond friendship.

The author shares his sexual awakening in a sensitive, sensual, erotic way.  He fills the pages with searing imagery, coating the reader in a liquid atmosphere.  This is just a taste of what would come for the author.

NO DISTANCE BETWEEN US is a part of The Harem Boy's Saga, a memoir by Young, which is available at an Amazon near you.

booking freakboy: WORLD WAR POO by Jon Flushing

Duncan's day is about to turn to shit.  He thinks he is  going to drop a few friends off at the pool, but instead he literally makes one sizable crappy one.  Big Al is a living, breathing piece of shit and he is not alone.  Freshly plopped out pieces of poop from around the globe have found life and now the world is about to go down the toilet.  Will Duncan keep his job and girlfriend?  Will Big Al dry out?  Will Duncan and Big Al stop the needless flushing of shit as World War Poo rages around them?

Author Jon Flushing keeps squeezing out the poop jokes as his surprisingly likable characters deal with life, love and war.  If you are easily offended, and actually made it this far into my review, I do not recommend this book.  However, if you enjoy a constant splattering of toilet humor, then WORLD WAR POO may be the crazy, pervy, twisted tale for you!

booking freakboy: ZERO HOUR MONSTERS by Simon Saddington

Joel is a kid with an active imagination.  He sees monsters around every corner.  Through his eyes, some of the adults in his town may be otherworldly creatures in disguise.  What if it's not just in Joel's imagination?  What if monsters are real?  Joel and his best friend Peter may uncover a truth bigger than Joel's imagination when they follow a suspected werewolf home...

Author Simon Saddington weaves a fun and fast-paced tale for kids and adults which will leave you wanting more.  One aspect of ZERO HOUR MONSTERS that really stands out for me is how vibrantly the author captures the innocence and magic of being a kid.  My childhood self completely related to Joel's belief in the existence of Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster.  I just hope Joel, unlike me, never grows up and suffers from a skepticawl mind.

You can find ZERO HOUR MONSTERS by Simon Saddington from an Amazon near you...
