Andy Milligan managed to meld what appears to be his three favorite genres, horror, sexploitation and family melodrama, into one gleefully grisly and absurd film. The medieval (?) setting gave him the opportunity to show off some of the wildest costumes he ever designed for his films. Don’t panic though, Swirl Camera is here, along with other Milligan modus operandi, such as the previously mentioned crucifixion, pitchfork, hunchback, incest, and male and female nudity. What more can you want from grindhouse cinema? If all of these things peak your interest, pull up an iron chair, or maybe sit on your porcelain throne, and explore the sights and sounds of TORTURE DUNGEON!
Freak Out,

Coincidentally, over the weekend I watched Torture Garden, the Amicus horror anthology film written by Robert Bloch. Now here is Torture Dungeon, which, judging by your excellent review, is something else altogether, as only Andy Milligan could have made it. Gleeful, grisly and absurd sounds like quite the combination, and you've got to hand it to the auteur who comes up with the idea to name all 3 of the court sycophants Peter! I am getting ever closer to watching an AM film all the way through... 😅
ReplyDeleteI will have to seek out Torture Garden for comparison!
DeleteAs for you watching a Milligan movie all the way through, maybe you should wait until February of next year. That’s all I can say about that…for now! 🤭
Great review, John. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought I saw this, but based on your colorful description, I doubt it. This sounds like a must-see in my continuing education of all things Milligan!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Barry!
DeleteI’ll admit there may be an Andy Milligan movie or two you might forget you watched, but I think you’d remember Torture Dungeon!
As for your Milligan education, there may be a test coming in February, but that’s all I can say for now! 🤭
